Thank you Mark! It is a fabulous place. Sadly, people are destroying it… they’re not thinking. In addition to the damage from the bikes (since Covid, a huge increase in bicycles), many people are letting their dogs run off leash. They’re damaging sensitive habitats as well as the wood rats structures and they’re chasing wildlife. Last week I filmed dogs chasing deer. It’s really sad. I’m not sure what we can do to stop this. Please e-mail me if you have ideas on how we can preserve the canyon. It’s a very special place.

One week ago today, I “discovered” the “Canyon” trail system from the Highlands Rec Center!
14 years ago, when my kids first started swimming at the pool,
the Rec Center did not easily connect with the trail-
at least back then, I could not find a way around the
poison oak and scrub that blocked the way, at least with a 5-year-old.
I also spent some time bushwhacking down along the storm-drain creek,
but that was even more heinous.
But the trail is open now, 14 years later, and
I have hiked on it 5 of the days since last Sunday.
And for all those years, I-just-knew there was
something good down in The Canyon,
-it is even more wonderful than I could have imagined:
Rocky waterfalls gushing with the rain this past week,
California Buckeyes and Bay Laurel nuts strewn everywhere-all-around,
Ferns and Miners lettuce just starting to sprout,
no poison oak yet, and
…the most primeval native plant forest I have seen anywhere!
And then today, I didn’t hike,
but instead discovered your treasure-trove
of videos about the animals that live there.. Wow!
I had seen the “Bay Area Bobcat Project” cam on the trail, and
found the videos.
I have noticed that some work that has been done
to widen the trail (esp. at switchbacks) for mountain bikes.
Most of this work seems recent and rather ramshackle, and
as it didn’t rain much last spring, it may all wash out
when we get a big “gully-washer” this year.
The mountain bikes have made some sections of trail
into troughs, which is never a good thing with a lot of rain.
In fact, on the side trail leading around and up to Mt. Highlands,
-which mostly is graded to avoid troughs-
there is a section of the trail that looks to have been
“cut and filled” very recently- so that I could see the “fill” section
start to slump down the hillside after the rain started,
-just during my 5 days of hiking!
I see that you have not posted much in the past year,
I hope that you are well, and
thank you for this wonderful look at the wildlife in our backyards!
Sincerely, Mark Fearon

Hi there,
I’m sorry you need to rehome your cat. There are probable pixie bob rescue groups in your area. I recommend checking on petfinder or googling pixie bob rescue. I’m assuming you know that pixie bobs are 100% domestic cats. There is no wild cat in the breed.

He loves to play with his many toys and is quite active best pet. If you no of any that need a loving home please e mail or call @ 267-339-4869.
